RECENT EDITORIALS ABOUT THE HARRY POTTER LEXICON CASE
from The Muskegon Chronicle:
Lighten up, Harry
Given the international recognition she enjoys, along with the billions in Euros, the fan adulation, the mansions, the servants and the sheer and utter "magic" of knowing you are able to buy virtually anything (and everyone), it is difficult to understand how "Harry Potter" author J. K. Rowling could, legally or otherwise, seriously claim to be "hurt" by a fan publication that would presumably only enrich her success.
Yet this is precisely the argument being made against author Steven Vander Ark of Grand Rapids, who has chosen RDR Books, based here in Muskegon, to print an unauthorized reference work, the "Harry Potter Lexicon." RDR's publisher is Roger Rapoport of Norton Shores. Rowling has brought suit against Rapoport's book house to stop the Vander Ark volume.
We don't want to take anything away from Rowling; her success story is justifiably renowned, but she (and Harry) should lighten up. Rather than cast legal spells against well-meaning authors and publishers, her money wand should be waved instead against the legions of global rip-off artists producing unauthorized, and virtually exact, copies of her books and movies.
